Certification
To verify the commitment Island Timberlands makes to the environment, we are registered to two environmental certification systems. Our performance is audited annually by a third party, for both of these systems to ensure we are maintaining the required standards.
Sustainable Forestry Initiative
All of Island Timberlands' managed forest lands are certified as complying with the standard developed by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) (2005-2009 Standard). As a program participant of SFI, we must comply with all portions of the SFI standard that are relevant to our operations. The program is a system of principles, objectives and performance measures that aim to balance the economic benefits of forest management with other forest values. SFI's standards are updated every five years and are based on nine principles:
- Sustainable Forestry
- Responsible Practices
- Reforestation and Productive Capacity
- Forest Health and Productivity
- Long-term Forest and Soil Productivity
- Protection of Water Resources
- Protection of Special Sites and Biological Diversity
- Legal Compliance
- Continual Improvement

Environmental Management System
All of Island Timberlands' forest operations are guided by our Environmental Management System (EMS) which is compliant with the ISO 14001 standard.
Our EMS contains procedures, standards, training and guidelines that are applied through all phases of operations. As a management tool, the EMS is used to assess environmental risk and identify best practices, thereby mitigating the environmental impact of our activities. The system focuses on continual improvement and a structured approach to setting environmental objectives and targets, achieving those objectives and targets, documenting progress and demonstrating that they have been achieved.
Our Environmental Policy describes Island Timberlands' actions and commitments to environmental stewardship.
